Sculpture Grande offers artists a unique exhibition in the centre of Prague that combines the advantages of art show and group exhibitions into a new format. The project hall departs from convention in that, for example, there is no grouping into countries, themes, chronological, medial or curatorial criteria. The focus is on the optimal, autonomic exhibition of the artistic creation, thereby opening up a new dimension for the presentation and dissemination of contemporary art. Launched as an open-air visual art project in Prague in the year 2003, the new art platform rapidly made an excellent name for itself and today attracts international attention. The majority of works are acquired by museums, private collections and artists. Critics and art collectors from around the world visit and appreciate Sculpture Grande Prague. It is gratifying to note that the exhibition is not only interesting for acknowledged art experts, but is also immensely popular with the general public.
By the artistic projects to be shown outdoors, a number of challenges will have to be met. These works are displayed on the redesigned exhibition square. In taking this step, we wished to avoid creating a traditional sculpture park. Instead, a selection has been made of a few very different works intended for open spaces, and these are positioned in quite specific locations.
Sculpture Grande is only possible thanks to generous partnership and support from City of Prague, which has contributed to the project from the very beginning and to which we are immensely grateful.
Most artists come to Prague install their works by person. Many of them create new works especially for Sculpture Grande, or present them here to an international public for the first time. We thank all participating artists as well as everyone who has worked behind the scenes to ensure the success of Sculpture Grande. My team and I wish you exceptional encounters with the contemporary art.
